Democratic state Representative Richard Creagan wants to ban all cigarette use by the year 2024. He believes he has a responsibility to protect the health of the Hawaiian people.

Age Limit: Cigarette Use

The state already has some of the country’s strictest cigarette laws, including comparatively high tax rates ($3.20 in taxes per pack) and a minimum smoking age of 21. The age limit would increase every year by 10 years more.  By 2024 you would have to be 100 to buy cigarettes. Will Richard Creagan resist industry pressure to not stop the smoking of cigarettes? Smoking is not just an addiction but a big business.

Glamorous Smoking Turns Unhealthy

States have taken into their own hands to ban smoking in public places, work areas, bars, and restaurants. But there is no nationwide ban on smoking. Should there be a nationwide ban on smoking? Smoking used to be popular in our country starting with the 1950s. In 1950s America cigarette smoking was the epitome of cool and glamour. Hollywood icons such as James Dean and Humphrey Bogart were never without one. Screen beauties such as Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich made smoking look sensual and sophisticated. Now, it isn’t as socially acceptable. It is considered a health and environmental hazard.

What is the Main Priority?

Smoking is banned on all flights since the year 2000, and more restrictions are more to come. Slowly but surely more smoking bans and taxes are being implemented because the environment and health are gaining more focus. Going organic or extracting toxins from our body is a main priority. How will the addictive nature of cigarettes be dealt with? Will banning cigarettes get rid of the smoking habit?  Fifteen states banned the sale of cigarettes from 1890 to 1927, partially overlapping with Prohibition (from 1920 to 1933). People still smoked in undercover.

Other Choices with Tobacco

The ban that Creagan wants to put into place will not cover chewing tobacco, cigars, and e-cigarettes. The type of cigarettes that people are choosing to smoke these days are e-cigarettes. Tobacco is no longer just smoking cigarettes but other modernized choices.
