The brain is like a computer, and it stores information in an unusual way. The science of the brain is more unique than you think.

Forgetful? The Unique Structure of the Brain

Are you really being forgetful when you can’t remember a name or a detail? Is our brain actually functioning in a normal way?

Encoding Like a Computer

Don’t underestimate that little section in your brain called the hippocampus. What are the steps of memory? First, encoding happens when our brain perceives information around us and uses our senses to record memories.

Storage

Neurons pass signals to one another and the neural activity stores information. Our brain stores short-term and long-term memory. Those memories that make an impact is what is remembered.  All the first moments in a person’s life: first dance, first kiss, first ride.

Recall

When our brain visits those pathways we retrieve information. We can help our memory by reviewing information from our past and exercising our brain. Our brain is like a muscle, so exercise it! Sleep and eating habits help with recalling information.

So, when you forget something, does that mean you are not smart? No, professors were involved in a study at the University of Toronto and found out that perfect memory is not a sign of intelligence.

Our brains actually are like filters. The hippocampus, which stores our memory, keeps the highlights of information and lets go of details. If you can’t remember the exact location of where your keys are placed, the brain may have omitted that detail.

Our Brains Depend on Computers for Information in Our Modern Times

In this age, will we need to depend too much on our brains for memory with technology progressing? Think of a question, and it can be answered by “Google.” The internet can answer our questions, help us with decisions, plan events, and even remind us about appointments. The need to work our working memory might be a thing of the past.

Just install “Google Assistant” and you have a reminder system, you can set dates, and other functions that act as an extra brain. However, technology is not perfect.

A Computer only Remembers What You Tell it to Remember: It Still Needs a Human Brain.

If you want a working brain, don’t shy away from notes, reviewing information and dates, and challenging your brain.  Know that your brain is functioning in the way you nurture or take care of it.  It stores the highlights of your memories, without cluttering your storage. In a lot of ways, it works like a computer in filing away important information. Actually, it’s like a flash drive that stores tons of information. When it gets too full it’s time to clear away files.

The next time you can’t remember that school date, dinner reservation, or significant event, make sure you wrote it down on a calendar.
